The comment from the better 7/8ths as she laid in the hospital bed following her total knee replacement surgery.
The surgery went well - longer than usual, but then given the better 7/8ths, this comes as no surprise. She is never one to do things the easy way.
Apparently now an epidural is used to keep the leg numb by delivering pain meds directly to the femoral nerve - they were going to use this on the better 7/8ths, but when told she was allergic to Novocaine, they just opted for a shot of morphine. The epidural would have lasted around three days, which would have been nice, but three days of continuous anaphalctic shock? We passed.
The surgeon went in through the old scar. They discovered that there was more scar tissue than anticipated, so that took longer. Then once in they discovered that the ligament attached to the kneecap had ruptured at some point, so that had to be fixed. The upshot is that her recovery will take longer in that no weight can be put on the leg for two weeks at least until the ligament heals.
She comes home Friday. This should be interesting. A home health care provider is supposed to visit twice a day and blood is to be drawn twice a week to check the level of blood thinner and adjust that as needed.
I'll just be happy to have her home.
