At the property auction at the local college last month I picked up a new/old toy...
A Mac G4 500 PowerPC that came with
a 21" Apple Studio Display.
From Other World Computing (macsales.com) I've purchased the following:
- 80 Gb hard drive (came with no hard drive)
- 2 Gb RAM (came with, I think, 1 Gb RAM max)
-
Sonnet Encore/ST G4 1.8GHz (1800MHZ) Processor Upgrade
-
Samsung Super Writemaster SH-S202N/BEBN [Black Bezel] 'SuperDrive' w/ Lightscribe
In all honesty I probably sank more $ into this "toy" than what it's probably worth - especially for use at work to surf the web and check email. I'll also use it to write papers in the fall, and with the processor upgrade I can run Leopard on the machine. The studio display, all 77 lbs of it, will be going back to the property yard since I don't need or want it. It does have a VGA connector and 4 USB 1.1 ports. I haven't turned it on, but it probably works OK.
Given the cost that I've put into it, I could have purchased from Mac of All Trades a better base machine, but it would still have needed at least the RAM upgrade. I plan on using this machine as my "hot spare" in case my Macbook Pro up and dies on me. My 13" white Macbook will now become my true portable computer. I might just end up using it in class to take notes, further degrading my handwriting...
